How to Use the Mortar Mix Calculator

Choose your units and a mortar use (which sets the cement-to-sand ratio), enter the volume of mortar you need, and press Calculate mortar to see the cement, sand and water amounts.

What it accounts for

• A dry-volume factor of 1.33 converts wet mortar volume to dry ingredients.
• Cement is estimated at 1440 kg per cubic metre and sand at about 1600 kg per cubic metre.
• Water is estimated as about half the cement weight, a common starting point.

Choosing a mix

1:5 is a general bricklaying mix, 1:4 is stronger for load-bearing work and screeds, and 1:3 is a strong mix for repointing. The right ratio depends on the job, so confirm it with your supplier or a local mix design.
